I took dad to see one of his specialists this past week. It was raining hard when we went and we were soaked just getting inside. Dad had a good exam and doesn’t need to be seen again for another year. He is doing very well and I was pleased.
The last time I took him there was almost exactly a year ago. That time he had to go to the bathroom 3 or 4 times while we were there. I didn’t realize that he probably had a urinary tract infection at that time as he ended up in the hospital about 2 weeks later with blood in his urine. Today he didn’t have to make any stops at all, though he was wearing Depends.
When I went to pick him up, he was sitting in the lobby. I told him I would put his snacks in his refrigerator and then take him to the doctor. When I returned from his room to the lobby, his “friend” Mary was sitting with him. He said: “This is my friend, Mary”. I said hello, and that I was sorry but I had to take him to his eye doctor. She tried holding some papers over his face so I wouldn’t see him as she didn’t want him to leave. I was surprised as she hasn’t been with dad much in the last few weeks. Mostly she has been with the other man who I once believed was her husband.
The doctor’s aid told dad she remembered seeing him last year. I was surprised as even I didn’t recognize her from all the people I have seen in medical offices in the past year and surely she has seen even more.
We were gone a few hours and when we got back, she wasn’t still in the lobby. I took him to his room and left him there. He asked what he was supposed to do now, and I said anything he wants to. He could nap or whatever as he had hours until supper.
I had planned to take dad out for coffee and a snack after his medical visit. But with the heavy rain, I decided to save that outing for another day. I didn’t even mention it to him today, though I had said something last week when I told him I would be taking him to the doctor soon. He forgets anyway, but I like to tell him what is coming up.
I hated to have to take dad out on such a terrible day such as today. I was afraid he would get cold and soaking wet. He rushes across the parking lot and doesn’t wait for me with the umbrella as I get his walker out and then try to get the doors locked, etc. Luckily we were parked near the building. I am glad we got that done, and I can check that doctor off my list for another year. With luck, dad will stay well and I won’t have to take him for any unplanned visits!
